Meal cost calculator
What you use and what you buy are different numbers. See both, adjust the people count, and start with the food you already have.
Enter the amount used for the original servings. Changing the people count scales that amount; pantry stock stays fixed. Use the same unit for package size, amount used and stock.
Illustrative USD prices, not a live grocery quote. Replace every example price with your own. Excludes tax, delivery and cooking energy. Values stay in this page and reset when you reload.
How to calculate recipe cost
Divide the package price by the usable package quantity. Multiply by the quantity used in your recipe. Add the ingredient costs, then divide by the number of servings.
Example: $1.60 ÷ 16 oz × 6 oz of pasta = $0.60 used. For two people, that pasta contributes $0.30 per serving. Buying the full package still costs $1.60 if you have none.
Account for the food already in your kitchen
The “already have” field reduces the quantity you need to buy, not the cost of the ingredients used. Shopping spend rounds up to whole packages. This means doubling a recipe does not always double the checkout total.
Use edible quantities. For drained canned beans, compare the drained package yield with the drained amount used. Do not mix grams and cups in a row. Converting between mass and volume requires an ingredient-specific conversion.
Common questions
Why is the shopping total higher than the meal cost?
You may need a whole package but use only part of it. Plan another meal for the remainder instead of assigning its entire price to this dinner.
Can I compare a homemade meal with takeout?
Use the ingredient total for an ingredient-only comparison. For a fuller comparison, separately include cooking energy and any applicable tax, delivery or service fees on each side.
Are the example prices accurate for my store?
They are illustrative, not a current price survey. Your receipt is the best starting point. Change the example prices and include every ingredient before relying on the total.
